Beyond the Seas: Routes, Traders and Narratives of Macau and the South China Sea

This volume focuses on interactions within the South China Sea and Macau from approximately 1200 to 1750. It examines maritime contacts in that period, emphasizing their global and complex nature.

The volume is divided into two parts: “Around and about South China Sea” and “Around and about Macau and the Dutch”, featuring thirteen contributions which explore questions related to historical geography, traditional cartography, nautical conventions, commercial exchange, individual sources, the Luso-Dutch clash in 1622, and its reception in later times.

By presenting these diverse perspectives, the volume aims to provide an overview of current research in the field, highlighting the intricate histories and lieux de mémoire that have significance both locally and globally over centuries.
