Este volume de estudos de diversas áreas das humanidades tem por foco o primeiro jornal de Macau em língua portuguesa. Imbuída das doutrinas liberais, A Abelha da China foi uma breve, mas intensa publicação
periódica (1822-23) que veio dar corpo à ideia de que não há verdadeira liberdade sem imprensa e sem a liberdade desta.
Plenamente alinhada com os debates do seu tempo, o seu projeto seria tomado por outros agentes políticos. Todavia, o seu legado de insubmissão acabaria por vingar. Jornal que fez as vezes de boletim oficial, e também de arena de confronto político, não descurou uma dimensão cultural e até literária, pois trazia em si a missão de instruir os seus leitores e de denunciar a tirania absolutista que, mais tarde, em refluxo, se apoderaria do próprio jornal.
Assistimos também na Abelha às primeiras articulações de uma ideia de autonomia sempre ligada à oligarquia local. Nesse sentido, o jornal mostra também as alianças e os contactos múltiplos que o atravessam: com a China, onde sempre se enraizou, a Metrópole, o Brasil e Goa. Por entre as suas páginas circulam figuras e influências de todas as proveniências, mostrando como Macau se integrava plenamente nos movimentos políticos e culturais do seu tempo, e onde a comunidade chinesa se encontrava ativa face a eles. E daí os casos, as figuras e os confrontos que gravitam em seu tomo, e que os ensaios de historiadores e críticos da cultura e do jornalismo dissecam nesta obra: Jin Guoping, Cátia Miriam Costa, Jorge Arrimar, Pablo Magalhães e Tereza Sena. Duzentos anos depois, este livro mostra um renovado interesse na história de Macau, na história do jornalismo na China e em língua portuguesa, na história sociopolítica e cultural do território. O pólen que a Abelha trouxe consigo – com seu trabalho e coragem – aqui está.

Much has been written and said concerning five uninhabited islets and three barren rocks in the East China Sea, which are known as the ‘Diaoyu’ in China and ‘senkaku’ in Japan. While such a small territory might seem to be of little significance, the islets and rocks have come to be of strategic importance due to their location and the maritime resources in their vicinity While they have been under Japanese control since the SinoJapanese war of 7894-7895, the islets have been claimed both by the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China ever since that time, and there have been spikes of tension in the relationship between the neighbouring nations. Such a spike happened in 2072, when the Japanese government purchased three of the islets from the Japanese family that owned them. This act led to widespread Chinese protests and threats of retaliation, as well as an exponential increase in the number of coastguard and naval vessels from Japan and the People’s Republic of China in the vicinity of the islets. The increase has caused concern regarding the region becoming a potential hotspot that could escalate into a military conflict between the People’s Republic of China and Japan. This could lead to the involvement of the United States, which has pledged to protect all territory under Japanese control.
This book offers a new perspective on the conflict. The concept of soft power has received and continues to receive much academic attention. One of the reasons for this continuous interest is the notion that soft power can function not only as a complement, but even as an alternative to hard powe4 reducing military interventions, and the damage and casualties that occur as a result. The concept of ‘strategic narratives’ is a recent development, and it has been described as the soft power of the 21st century Strategic narratives address how different states try to use alternative narratives to sway target audiences, as well as to influence the formation, projection, diffusion, and reception of ideas in the international system. This book analyzes the power of strategic narratives as a means to exert persuasion and influence. One specific point in the Diaoyu,/Senkaku dispute is examined in detail, through the strategic narratives disseminated in English language versions of Chinese and Japanese online newspapers published in 2012, prior to, during, and after the announcement of the purchase of the islets by the Japanese government.

This volume, which inaugurates one of the new CCCM book series, devoted to historical studies, consists of the compilation of eleven chapters by ten authors. The volume is focused on maritime East Asia, Macau, intercultural contacts and other aspects that have China and the Sea as their central axes. These chapters span a temporal arc that extends, for the most part, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, while in some cases they also encompass the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It can thus be stated that they cover the late-Ming and Qing dynasties.
Due to the thematic diversity of the contributions, this volume is organized in three sections. The first section is titled ‘Chinese Maritime Trade, Entrepreneurs, and Routes’, the second ‘Contacts and Perceptions: Writing, Publishing and Exhibiting’, and the third ‘Macau, Networks and Archival Materials’.

The change in the global position of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) twenty years ago has been dramatic. The first two decades of the twenty–first century has seen China transform itself into the world’s second largest economy and become one of the leading nations in the world. This unprecedented development has brought the country into direct contact with almost every nation in the world, and the policies and actions of Chinese leaders are now closely followed world–wide daily. As with all major political actors, praise and criticism are now directed towards the decision–makers in the PRC and their policies and actions, to a previously unseen degree. To manage its enormous power, promote its agendas and bold enterprises, gain trust of foreign counterparts, and allay perceived criticism of its actions, the Chinese government has become increasingly adept at using several strategies to convey its messages to its global audience, as well as to the Chinese population. These strategies function as a form of soft power, and are intended to display that the PRC, unlike other global players and principally the United States, has not committed itself to the use of hard power, in the form of overt military force, but is a trustworthy and responsible partner. As the papers in this volume show, these strategies are achieved by different means, including propaganda, reliance on censorship and coercion and use of party–state controlled media, among others.

Lançámos o repto a dezassete autores para que escrevessem sobre a “sua China”, em sintonia, exposta em obras de referência. Desafiando as advertências do Orientalismo, de Edward Said, procura-se explorar a dialética dos olhares, entre chineses e não chineses, tanto no centro como na periferia. Não é um compêndio sobre livros da China, mas uma publicação sobre apreensões ou emoções vivenciadas no Império do Meio. Trata-se de uma tentativa de correspondência, entre duas perceções, de uma mesma realidade, confrontando o prisma de quem a olhou, com a visão de quem a está a olhar. O desafio faz-nos lembrar as experiências do francês A.D., na China, e do chinês Llng W.Y., na Europa. Estas personagens, nascidas da escrita fina de Malraux, sujeitaram-se ao embate da cultura do “outro”, e, assim, exprimiram por correspondência os palpites da alma com laivos de imaginação.
