Between Reality and Fiction: A Global History of the Export Paintings and the transformation of Macau’s Image in the 18th and 19th Centuries
(在真實與虛構之間:18-19世紀澳門形象的演變與外銷畫的全球貿易史)
As the method of “Images as Historical Evidence” emerged in social history, new cultural history, and global history at the beginning of this century, paintings of Macau as a subject matter from the 18th and 19th centuries have once again become an important document for historians studying Macau’s history. Paintings with different creative backgrounds and purposes show us different social landscapes and meanings of Macau.
Export custom paintings were an important commodity in China’s global trade, and this talk will attempt to deconstruct and reconstruct Macau society before the invention of photography by using several recently highly regarded paintings by Chinese historians, such as 18th Century Long Scroll on Macau Landscape(澳門山水長卷)and so called the Gentiloni Paintings of Macau, etc. This talk will also discuss the methods and pitfalls of “Images as Historical Evidence” when applied to the study of Macau’s history.
