The thousands of years of intercultural relations between China and European cultures until the late 15th century were episodic, tangential and far more indirect than direct. It was in the 16th century (Melaka/1509) that continuous and direct intercultural relations started to develop. Between the early 16th and late 18th centuries, the intercultural relations of some European cultures with China grew into a regular process of the exchange of information and knowledge, goods and sensorial paths. A process with implications on a world scale that overflowed from Europe and East Asia to West Africa and the America of both the Atlantic and Pacific.

Neste pequeno livro gostaria de dar a conhecer a deusa chinesa dos navegantes e, ao mesmo tempo, seguir o percurso que o seu culto teve. Hoje, Mazu – esta é uma das suas designações, é uma das mais importantes representantes do mundo dos deuses da Ásia Oriental. Não é, certamente, exagero afirmar que o culto de Mazu é muito popular e, desde há alguns anos, teve um impulso renovado proveniente tanto da República Popular da China como de Taiwan. Parece-nos que este tema será também de interesse na Europa. Contudo, não é minha intenção “implementar” conceitos religiosos ou etnológicos e analisar o desenvolvimento do culto de Mazu, com base em teorias e modelos. Também deixarei de lado, em grande parte, embora não completamente, a comparação com outros deuses e divindades. Há factos básicos que são mais importantes, assim como factores políticos e económicos que contribuíram para o desenvolvimento do culto de Mazu. As etapas são aqui apresentadas, individualmente, em capítulos curtos, numa ordem cronológica e reduzidas ao que é essencial.
